Police Department News 05.10

June 10, 2010

During the month of May we conducted a number of events.  The Bradford Elementary School and Bradford Police Department graduated this years D.A.R.E. class.    On May 26, 2010 thirty-eight students from the fifth grade at Kearsarge Regional Elementary School (KRES) successfully completed and graduated from the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The program, a 10-week long curriculum, started on March 3rd and was instructed by Officer Ed Shaughnessy of the Bradford Police Department. The D.A.R.E. program gives our children the tools they need to resist drugs and make correct, healthy choices. Students are also taught the many health effects of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. These are our kids, from our community, and we want their futures to be bright, healthy, safe and secure.

During the 10 week curricula lessons were taught on the health effects of Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs, Peer Pressure (good and bad), Ways to avoid risky situations, Ways to get out of bad situations, and Advertisements. Students did a lot of role playing activities to use what they learned throughout the lessons to make better choices. Part of the lesson plan for Week 9 was for students to create a D.A.R.E report. The report, in the form of an essay, shadow box or poster, was to explain what the students learned in D.A.R.E. and why it was important to them. Three winners were chosen from Mrs. Lee’s class and three winners were chosen from Mrs. Dukette’s class. Posted on this site are a few of the projects done by our local students. Special recognition also goes out to the winners of the essay contest. They are Jennifer Merriam, Kelsea Davis, Morgan Flinkstrom, Mia Bailey, Tyler Valovic and Molly Morris.

Officer Shaughnessy and the Bradford Police Department would like to thank Principal Spadaro, Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Dukette for allowing time in their lesson plans for the D.A.R.E. program. The Department, Bradford Elementary School, and Outspokin Sports conducted a bicycle safety rodeo.  Bicycles were inspected, skills were developed, and helmets issued to those that needed new helmets.  Thank you to both Jim Spadaro, Bradford Elementary School, and Will Hurley, Outspokin Bicycle and Sports for their assistance.

Police Department News 03.10

March 10, 2010

As we progress into 2010 a number of issues should be considered by all of us as a community and society. First let me update you on a couple of pending issues that we don’t normally see in this area. During December and January we had two motor vehicles taken without authority. One has been recovered in the state of Florida and the person of interest in that matter charged. The second vehicle was recovered in Nashua, New Hampshire. There two youths who are persons of interest in this matter were taken into custody and charges may be pending in the City of Nashua.

During the past two months, a number of people have brought to our attention their concerns regarding things that have been tolerated in the past. One is leaving a motor vehicle running while the driver goes into a store or the school. In one case the concerned citizen expressed that he was concerned with all the kids running around at the school that one could jump into an unattended vehicle. You can see that this does raise real concern. RSA 265:72, I says “No person driving or in charge of a vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key and effectively setting the brake thereon…”

We have over the past few months expressed concern over the vehicles parking on the sidewalk along Main Street. We did begin to issue citations and I am happy to say that the number of violations is now non-existent.

We are hoping to present a short class on firearms and weapons safety geared to those people who wish to get permits to carry but also for anyone who may be interested. There have been a number of people who want permits but are concerned about their right, safety, storage and the laws covering this responsibility. Hopes are to be able to present this information sometime during late spring.

We are currently planning a bicycle safety and rodeo for this spring. During the session Outspokin Sports will be present to inspect the bicycles and we are seeking a grant so that we will have helmets for the attendees.

We asking everyone to start thinking about the ongoing and new concerns surrounding the internet. We all share the concern that some sexual predators will connect with our children on line. But, Law Enforcement is now seeing a new emergence of concern, and that is the growing use by not only foreign terrorists, preying on individuals but also the attraction to gang information and gang membership. These groups play on people looking for attention and re-enforcement. Because of the appeal that some of these groups have some of our children maybe be at serious risk. We will continue to follow this topic so that we can keep you informed.

We are asking anyone who knows of either senior residents or special needs residents to call us and we will add those citizens to our list of residents that we contact during periods of concern like the power outage of a week ago. During that period we were able to contact and check on 35 to 40 households. Thank you.

Police Department News 12.14.09

December 14, 2009

The department would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. November was a busy month. We have recently started to fill the part time slots we lost over this past year. Craig Norton has started the field training program and will be attending the Part Time Academy in February, 2010. A number of other candidates are also being considered to file the remaining slots. We have been short on man power and have filled hours on a need basis along with trying support a regular schedule.

A criminal trespass and mischief case has been referred to the County Attorney’s Office for presentation to the grand jury. We also have a number of other cases currently waiting Grand Jury consideration. There were a number of thefts that stand out during the month. A number of chain saws were stolen from parked trucks on Rt. 114 and new replacement windows were taken from a property on East Main Street. Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 938-2522.

We have added a Facebook account for the department. It is under the “Town of Bradford Police Department“. We have tried to keep it posted with recent events of interest.

Again we wish everyone a very happy holiday season and good health into the new year.
