Library Trustee Minutes 06.04.13

DRAFT Minutes from June 4, 2013

The Board Meeting for the Trustees of Brown Memorial Library was called to order at 6:02 p.m.

Attendance: Mary-Chris Duncan, Garry Kalajian, Patty Furness, Connie Scheffy, Bea Howe, Robert Toppi, Nola Jordan, Meg Fearnley

1. Bea reported that the Selectmen have approved our request to have Robert Toppi named an alternate trustee and he was seated to replace Rod Jones.

2. The secretary’s report was accepted as presented.

3. A motion was made and passed to accept donations to Brown Memorial Library in May in the amount of $1,394.50, all but $10.00 of which was from the Memorial Day weekend book and plant sale.  A rainy weekend apparently spurs shoppers!   Bea noted that an enormous thank you is due Janet Sillars for organizing the very popular plant sale.  We have received the second installment of our appropriation for the year and our finances are right on target.  The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented.

4. May circulation figures were similar to last year’s at this time.  Meg reported that she is still not seeing a lot of children but expects that to change once the summer reading program is underway.  Laurie Buchar has been visiting all the elementary school classrooms to do a presentation on the summer program.  Meg mentioned that Laurie will be out the month of June for medical reasons and that Shelby, who works Sundays, will cover Laurie’s hours.  There will be only one story hour a week during July and August, and Meg has decided to cut back to one movie night a month because of low attendance.

5. Under Old Business, it was reported that the ceiling fans will be ordered soon so that Mike Merritt can get them installed.

6. Under New Business, the Trustees discussed plans for the library’s entry in the Fourth of July Parade.  “Reading is for Heroes” is the theme of the Summer Reading Program and each of us on the float will dress as a god or goddess.  Laurie has brought in a couple boxes of clothing and props that may be helpful, and Erica has some ideas for decorating the float itself.

7. The Trustees discussed the wording of the plaque that will be placed on Rod’s grandfather clock and Bea will take care of getting it engraved.

8. Since no one is taking out our Sony e-reader any more, the Trustees approved Meg’s suggestion to put it in the next book sale.

9. The July Fourth weekend book sale will be held on Saturday, July 6, the same day as the parade.  As most of us will be around because of the parade, we will take turns manning the sale.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 6:00 p.m.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:32 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Nola Jordan, Secretary
