Library Trustee Minutes 11.02.11

Minutes from November 2, 2011

The Board Meeting for the Trustees of Brown Memorial Library was called to order at 6:05 p.m.

Attendance: Patty Furness, Garry Kalajian, Bea Howe, Lorraine Macleod, Rod Jones, Meg Fearnley, Nola Jordan

1.    The first sentence of item 8 of the Secretary’s Report was amended to read: “Meg explained that the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service offered by the state library is at risk due to a request by the state legislature to report on the possibility of using the federal funds that support this program for other undefined purposes.”   The Secretary’s Report was then accepted as presented.

2.    A motion was made and passed to accept gifts and donations to Brown Memorial Library in October in the amount of $350.02. The Columbus Day weekend book sale netted $270.00.  Under Expenditures, the $250.00 line item for programs includes the licensing fee that allows us to show movies to the public.  Thanks to the consortium the library has joined that fee will be less in the future.  The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented.

3.    The Librarian’s Report was presented and discussed.  Numbers remain about the same, with more patrons coming in though fewer materials are circulating.

4.    Under Old Business, the Trustees spent considerable time examining and revising the library policies.  Sections I through III were completed and work will continue at the next meeting.

5.    The Trustees signed a letter to Michael York, the head of the NH State Library, protesting the possible reduction in the number of vans providing ILL service throughout the state.

6.    Garry mentioned that he is continuing to pursue possibilities for an additional sign on the front of the building giving our hours.  He will get back to the board when he has a quote.

7.    Under New Business, Bea explained that Dick Moore, who has been doing our snow removal for many years, has decided that he cannot do the job any longer.  Because the town road crew does snow removal for the Community Center, the Selectmen were asked if the crew could also do the library.  They declined the request.  Meg is trying to contact a young man from town who is advertising for shoveling jobs.  For the time being, her son is living at home and may be willing to shovel if we can find no one else.

8.    Santa Claus will pay a visit to the library on Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 pm.  There will also be holiday stories, refreshments, carols and the lighting of the tree.  The little therapy horse will be here, too.  We are grateful to the Women’s Club for their organization of this event.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 7, at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Nola Jordan
Secretary
